Juliet Remembered, Starring Matt Lewis, Launches Kickstarter Campaign

Juliet Remembered
Juliet Remembered, a short film written and directed by Tamzin Merchant, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds needed to complete the project. The film is about an actress with Alzheimer’s disease who cannot recognise her son, but remembers every line of her favourite role: Shakespeare’s Juliet.

Maggie Steed will be playing Juliet while Matthew Lewis will play a nurse, Toby. More details about the cast, crew and themes of the film can be read over at the Juliet Remembered Kickstarter page. (Thanks to marcel for the tip!)

JULIET REMEMBERED is about an actress with Alzheimer’s disease who has been transferred to a carehome after the death of her husband. Although she cannot remember day-to-day things, or even recognize her son when he visits, she can remember every word of her most famous role: Shakespeare’s Juliet.

What if you could only communicate through Shakespeare’s words? Is Juliet constricted by this or do his words transcend experience to strangely beautify her disease?

Tamzin hopes to raise £6500 ($9500) to help finish the short and promote it through film festivals and other means.  The money you donate will help in this goal:

Filmmaking is an expensive process, particularly post-production. We already have some of the funding in place to start us off, but absolutely need your help to take us through the shoot, post production, marketing and festivals. For production, we need your support for camera rental, sound recording, transport and catering. With low-budget filmmaking, it’s crucial to prioritise funds for post including video editing, colour grading, sound design, Additional Dialogue Recording and music composition. Finally, we want JULIET REMEMBERED to be screened at as many festivals as possible and win lots of awards. Marketing, promotional materials and submission fees are costly. In short, we need you to get involved with bringing this poetic story to life.

Tamzin and producer Jessica Benhamou have some lofty aspirations for the film:

We want JULIET REMEMBERED to knock the socks off our respective first short films by qualifying for major Oscar and Bafta-accredited festivals around the world, such as Cannes, Raindance, Tribeca, Sundance and London Film Festival. Our first short films have already screened at eight festivals combined and Tamzin’s has won two awards. We are confident that JULIET REMEMBERED will raise the bar. Ultimately, we want our short film to pave the way for us to make feature films. Tamzin and Jessica both have feature scripts and TV pilots in development.

As two young, female filmmakers we know how important it is to tackle gender inequality on and off the camera through representation. Only one in ten Directors in the UK are women and we wish to tell stories about underrepresented groups.

Our story also combines entertainment with a strong social imperative. We hope to boost public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, according to the Alzheimer’s Society, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025.

Finally, we want to engage young people with their heritage and encourage an appreciation for Shakespeare. 2016 marks 400 years since his death and we want to celebrate Shakespeare’s life with an original interpretation of his most iconic heroine.

Tamzin, Matthew and fellow cast member Rakhee Thakrar also spoke to BBC One about the film. That interview may be watched below:

New Matt Lewis Interview with Evening Standard

To start off the new year we get a brand new interview with Matt Lewis from the Evening Standard. He talks about everything from his Attitude Magazine shoot and leaving Neville Longbottom behind to his new roles in Happy Valley, Ripper Street and Me Before You. The full interview, including some Harry Potter talk, may be read over at Evening Standard. You can also view ttwo photos and a scan of the paper in our gallery.

Matt Lewis Evening Standard

When talking about why he wanted to be in Ripper Street‘s 4th series, which will be available on Amazon Prime UK starting January 15th, he said:

“I have a morbid fascination with serial killers. This show is about dramatic human stories that happen to be set in Victorian England. The first episode deals heavily with imperialism, immigration, Islam, murder, police corruption and all these things we are still talking about today. Man’s inhumanity to man is an interesting topic.”

Unfortunately Matthew could not say much about his role as Sean in series 2 of Happy Valley other than the character is “a wayward soul” and that ” it was one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever undertaken. I had to go to some pretty dark places. I was strung up really tight.”

Next he moved on to chatting about Me Before You, which will be released on March 4th. Of his trainer Tim Buckley, who works with Daniel Craig on James Bond, he said he is “simultaneously my hero and the worst person I’ve ever met in the entire world because he flogged the shit out of me.”

The interview also goes into the awkward topic of looks and Matthew’s recent Attitude Magazine shoot.

“I was like ‘Why the hell do you want me?’ Naturally you think of cover models to be David Beckham or someone insanely handsome, not me. But I’ve worked with the photographer, Joseph Sinclair, before and he is incredibly talented. He suggested some more risqué shots because I was in the best shape of my life and I trust him. Of course I was self-conscious. Even if one day I end up looking like f***ing Chris Hemsworth I’m never going to not be self-conscious.”

He acknowledges “there is massive pressure on women, and increasingly men, to look good. If you step out on a red carpet not looking a certain way you’ll be rinsed mercilessly — and that’s disgusting.”

[…]

“Yeah. The photos were good and people were saying nice things. I’ve had a few marriage proposals but they should try living with me.”

And if you were wondering if Matt ever reads your Twitter messages, he does read them when he has time “because if people are taking the time to write you a message the least you can do is read it. Jo Rowling has the same attitude.”

Matt Lewis Roles/Events We’re Looking Forward To in 2016

Happy New Year everyone! As always, we are excited for the new year and will keep you up to date on all the latest in Matt’s acting career.

Megan predicts this will be a big year for the Yorkshire actor who has already proven to us that he’s more than Neville Longbottom (although we still love Neville dearly.) 2015 saw Matthew gain three new roles which will finally be released this year. Four if you count a voiceover for a possible animated show. Last year also included him breaking the internet with a certain photoshoot that has furthered his status as a “hottie.” (But try not to embarrass him by talking about his looks, though it may be hard *wink*)

We already have a myriad of things to look forward to this year so let’s take a look.

Matt Lewis

1. Ripper Street Series 4
Matt will be starring as PC Drummond in Ripper Street‘s 4th series. The series will be available exclusively for Amazon Prime Members in the UK from 15th January 2016.

2. A Celebration of Harry Potter
Matthew is one of the guests for the third annual Celebration of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. The weekend will include question and answer sessions, autographs and a night event in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We will hopefully be there to cover the event. Tickets and vacation packages can be purchased at Universals’ website.

3. Me Before You Release
Matt Lewis’ newest film, Me Before You, will be released on March 4th in the United States (and we assume the UK as well.) Matt stars as Patrick alongside Emilia Clarke (Lou) and Sam Claflin (Will). No word yet on when/where a world premiere will be. Hopefully we will have a trailer soon. Stay tuned!

Update: The film has been pushed back to its original release date of June 3rd

4. Happy Valley Series 2
Matthew will also be appearing in Happy Valley‘s second series playing the character of Sean. A release date has not been announced.

5. A New Role?
It’s been a while since we’ve had some casting news. Hopefully an exciting project is approaching. If you could choose any role for Matt, what would it be?

What are you looking forward to seeing Matt Lewis in this year?

The Iris Talks to Matt Lewis About Fans, Potter & More

While in Adelaide, Matt Lewis talked to The Iris about going to fan conventions, his work on the Potter films and why he thinks the Harry Potter films resonate with so many people!

“The phenomenon that was Harry Potter is still beguiling to me,” Lewis admits. “How huge it was and the fact that I’m on the other side of the world and people are fans, it’s very humbling and very spectacular. You think that eventually people will get bored of it and will die out, but it doesn’t! Generation after generation of kids just keep falling in love with it and I think it’s testament to what Jo wrote and that universe and how vivid that world is.”

On the experience of being in the films, Matt said:

“It’s a unique thing we did that I don’t think anyone could recreate it,” he says. “The fact is that none of us had to go through that on our own, we got to experience it together and it’s something we’ll always have. We’ll always have Paris, as it were.”

“I’m an incredibly lucky human being to have been a part of that.” Lewis continues. “It’s just something I can’t really quantify. I feel very privileged and the fact that I’m still working five, six years later, is because of those movies. My career now is completely based on what I did in those films and I’m playing characters that are so wildly different; I’ve got something coming out next year where I’m about as far from Neville as you could get, he’s pretty horrible, actually! It all comes off the back of that and as you say, the unique experience we went through. It’s nice because everyone is so lovely and so fantastic and I still have so many friends from those films, whether they’re the adult guys at the time, [Alan] Rickman or Robbie Coltrane, or Dan [Radcliffe] and Emma [Watson] and all those guys – everyone is such a close bunch, it’s nice to still have that.”

Matt Lewis also discusses why he thinks people love the Harry Potter books and films so much. We think he hit the nail on the head with this one, beautifully said.

“With Harry Potter, it’s that the universe lives parallel to our world – it’s always nice when you’re a young kid and school might be a bit shitty or you don’t know what you want to do with your life, to suddenly find out that you’re meant for something else, there’s something about you that’s a little bit special that no one else will understand. There’s something about that that is amazing and I think the thing about Harry Potter is that it keeps that dream alive. No matter how old you get, there’s always that dream of one day having someone come along and go, ‘You were right the whole time, you are special, and behind this brick wall, there’s this whole world you’re about to go to. You’re a bloody hero there.’ When I think about it as a fantasy world, that’s what I think is the most attractive thing about it.”
