Buzzfeed has shared a fun new interview with Matthew Lewis this morning. They ask him 39 seemingly random questions but we love hearing these facts about Matt. Definitely one of the more fun interviews from his Ripper Street promotion. A few of his answers may be read below:
Your biggest pet peeve? I’ve got quite a few actually. People who leave a bit of tea at the bottom of a mug. That pisses me off. Just drink the whole damn thing. What is wrong with you? Because when I go and put it in the dishwasher it goes everywhere and that does my head in. Drink the whole thing. I made it for you, drink it.
Favourite dance move? I can’t dance to save my life. I can’t name dance moves.
If so, what [have you stolen from a set?] [Laughs] Oh no, I knew that was coming! How long have you got? I’ve got the whole Neville outfit from the final [Harry Potter] film. The trousers and the shirt and the cardigan, sort of covered in blood and burn marks and stuff. They know I’ve got it now, but I did steal it – with the help of a costume dresser. We worked together and we smuggled it out of the building.
Funniest story from the Ripper Street set? Man, they’re a funny bunch of guys. There’s some good stuff that’s happened. One of the things that I did personally, a friend of mine called Jake, who was in this show, there was a point at which he was a corpse and he’s laid out on this slab, he’s all decked out to look like a dead body. And so we recreated that scene from Friends with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Joey, you know when he’s like [puts on accent] “This man is dying!” So we did that whole scene and then we put the cloth over his head and did the “This man is dead.” I’m not going to show it to you but we filmed it. That was a funny day.
Favourite joke? The price of Velcro’s going up. It’s a rip-off.
What’s your life motto? When I was younger it used to be “everything happens for a reason”, but as I’ve got older that seems to mean less to me. I don’t believe in fate, I don’t think our lives are predestined. I think that we achieve things by putting ourselves in positions to achieve things, whether that’s through learning or being positive. I try to take an outlook on life where good shit doesn’t just happen to people. People who get themselves out there and want to experience and say yes, they’re the people who experience these opportunities and stuff. So it’s a bit wanky, but I guess it’s kind of the idea that we make our own luck. We’re only here once, so it’s what we make of it. No one’s going to do it for us.

Monday, January 11, 2016 at 1:16 pm | Comments Off on Video: Matt Lewis on His Role in Ripper Street; Confirms He is in Series 5 |
The promotional tour for Ripper Street series 4 continues. Today What’s on TV have shared a new interview with Matthew where he talks about his role in the 4th series of Ripper Street. Ripper Street will begin streaming on Amazon Prime UK this Friday, January 15th. He is joined in the interview by Adam Rothenberg who plays Captain/Dr. Homer Jackson. They discuss stunts, Matt’s mustache and filming in Dublin. Matthew also hints at filming again.
While describing Sergeant Drummond Matt says;
“Sergeant Samuel Drummond is a new desk sergeant at the new police station and he is basically part of a new generation of police officer who are involved with a lot more of the science and technological side of modern day policing. So he’s in control of the telegram, the micro reader and the telephone systems and makes sure everyone uses these new ideas that are supposed to make the Met much more effiecient. But he’s also got a lot to learn, he’s just out of police academy or whatever, he’s a bit green.”

Update: In another new interview, this time with TalkSport, Matthew confirms that he will start filming the 5th series of Ripper Street next week. He also talks about Rugby League and his career since Harry Potter. To listen, visit this link, click 15:00-15:30 on the right of the player and then skip to 20:19. Some snippets may be read below. If anyone transcribes the full interview, feel free to send it in!
Matt: I joined as a new desk sergeant and it’s more of the same [as series 1-3], it’s about the comings and goings of people around East London in 1897. Queen Victoria’s Jubilee.
talkSPORT: So have you had to change your look?
Matt: The reason I’ve got this big beard is because we start filming on season 5 in about a week and my character has a big mustache and sideburns and a horrific center parting.
talkSPORT: So you grow the beard and you take the beard off at the last minute?
Matt: Exactly. So I’m going to have that for four months and I’m basically repellant to women so I have the beard for as long as possible.talkSPORT: You’re a new generation cop, so you’re kind of the modern hero.
Matt: My character Sergeant Drummond, he’s basically just joined in the last few months before the series starts and he’s kind of this new generation who’s very interested in modern technology so we get a telephone for the first time in the police station and that’s kind of Drummond’s baby and he teaches everyone how to use it. Everyone’s so used to running up and down stairs and getting young boys to relay messages and Drummond’s like “use the telephone.”

The Ripper Street Twitter account shared a photo of Matthew in series 4 of the show. Ripper Street will be available to Amazon UK Prime members beginning January 15th.
‘It was very humbling, very flattering. I kind of forget the global nature of the internet, once something’s out there it goes everywhere. So that was a bit shocking, but then again, people could be saying awful things but people were saying very, very nice things. I cannot complain at all.

Friday, January 8, 2016 at 10:49 am | Comments Off on Video: Matt Lewis Talks Ripper Street Series 4 |
In a new interview with Metro, Matt Lewis talks about his role in series 4 of Ripper Street, available on Amazon Prime UK from January 15th. His character’s full name, Desk Sergeant Samuel Drummond, has been revealed. The interview also included two new promotional photos, which may be seen in the gallery.
A transcript of the interview can be read below:
As an actor it’s quite nice to never know what you’re gonna be doing next, and since I finished on Harry Potter I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve been able to do some wildly different characters. And one thing that I’ve never done before is anything period, and I’ve basically done a Leeds accent – which is my accent – in everything I did.
I get to play a policeman in Victorian England, and do a cockney accent, so it ticked a few boxes. And then I read the scripts which were brilliant, and obviously look at the cast that I got to work with. It was a bit of a no-brainer, and it was kind of everything I hoped it would be. It’s been a great few months.

Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11:09 am | Comments Off on New Matt Lewis Interview with Evening Standard |
To start off the new year we get a brand new interview with Matt Lewis from the Evening Standard. He talks about everything from his Attitude Magazine shoot and leaving Neville Longbottom behind to his new roles in Happy Valley, Ripper Street and Me Before You. The full interview, including some Harry Potter talk, may be read over at Evening Standard. You can also view ttwo photos and a scan of the paper in our gallery.
When talking about why he wanted to be in Ripper Street‘s 4th series, which will be available on Amazon Prime UK starting January 15th, he said:
“I have a morbid fascination with serial killers. This show is about dramatic human stories that happen to be set in Victorian England. The first episode deals heavily with imperialism, immigration, Islam, murder, police corruption and all these things we are still talking about today. Man’s inhumanity to man is an interesting topic.”
Unfortunately Matthew could not say much about his role as Sean in series 2 of Happy Valley other than the character is “a wayward soul” and that ” it was one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever undertaken. I had to go to some pretty dark places. I was strung up really tight.”
Next he moved on to chatting about Me Before You, which will be released on March 4th. Of his trainer Tim Buckley, who works with Daniel Craig on James Bond, he said he is “simultaneously my hero and the worst person I’ve ever met in the entire world because he flogged the shit out of me.”
The interview also goes into the awkward topic of looks and Matthew’s recent Attitude Magazine shoot.
“I was like ‘Why the hell do you want me?’ Naturally you think of cover models to be David Beckham or someone insanely handsome, not me. But I’ve worked with the photographer, Joseph Sinclair, before and he is incredibly talented. He suggested some more risqué shots because I was in the best shape of my life and I trust him. Of course I was self-conscious. Even if one day I end up looking like f***ing Chris Hemsworth I’m never going to not be self-conscious.”
He acknowledges “there is massive pressure on women, and increasingly men, to look good. If you step out on a red carpet not looking a certain way you’ll be rinsed mercilessly — and that’s disgusting.”
[…]
“Yeah. The photos were good and people were saying nice things. I’ve had a few marriage proposals but they should try living with me.”
And if you were wondering if Matt ever reads your Twitter messages, he does read them when he has time “because if people are taking the time to write you a message the least you can do is read it. Jo Rowling has the same attitude.”
