Matthew Lewis Wraps ‘The Syndicate’

News is a bit slow lately, so I felt this warranted a news post.  Today Matthew Lewis and the other cast and crew of The Syndicate wrapped filming of the show today!  Matt announced this via a tweeting:

  • Always good to finish a project. Particularly one as fulfilling as The Syndicate. Thanks to @jopage_ @MatthewMcnultys, our kid and the rest.

The Syndicate is a five part BBC Miniseries about five workers at a cut-price supermarket in Leeds whose lives are turned upside down after they jointly win the lottery, going from facing redundancy and battling the present economic downturn to having more money than they ever dreamt of.  Matthew plays Jamie, brother of Stuart (played by Matthew McNulty.)  Potter star Timothy Spall (Peter Pettigrew) is also in the show and plays the supermarket’s manager, Bob.

As we posted last November the show will be airing in March on BBC1. An exact date is not known but rest assured that it will be posted here as soon as that information becomes available.

Also, to answer a frequently asked question: The Sweet Shop has NOT been released yet, so you cannot watch it or buy the DVD.  The studio is currently negotiating with distributors so hopefully it will be released soon. Keep watching the site for any developments!

[Video Interview] Behind the Scenes of ‘The Syndicate’

The BBC have posted a new behind the scenes feature on BBC Mini-Series The Syndicate, in which Matthew Lewis stars as Jamie.  In the video there is an interview with Matt as well as some shots of him filming.  You can see Matt from :36 – 1:06 in the video.  A transcript of the mini chat they show with Matthew and his co-star Matthew McNulty, who plays his brother, Stuart.

Matthew McNulty: He gets to drive a Ferrari
Matthew Lewis: I get a Ferrari, I get a strip club.
Matthew McNulty: Yea, his character buys a Ferrari, I get a bloody Volkswagon Golf…not that there’s anything wrong with that though.
Matthew Lewis: *laughs* You get a nice house though…
Matthew McNulty: Yes, to be fair I’ve got a decent house with a swimming pool and a kitchen.
Matthew Lewis: That I get to swim in.
Matthew McNulty: Yea, he swims, I don’t get to swim in it.

Update: Posted the video, thanks to SS for capturing it.

Matthew Lewis Talks Al Pacino; On SoccerAM Tomorrow

In a new interview with The Telegraph Matthew Lewis discusses one of his favorite actors, Al Pacino, and how he helped him through one of the tough times in his career, doing Agatha Christie’s Verdict. You can read the full interview at the previous link or in the press archive.

After the Potter films, I was doing a stage play [Agatha Christie’s Verdict] and really struggling with it, thinking, “I don’t know if I can do this.” So I started watching Dog Day Afternoon, and when I was watching it for the fifth time, the director came in and I told him: “I’m just trying to draw something, anything from his performance. I know it’s not what my character is, nothing to do with it, but I’m trying to get some inspiration from the big man.” […] He’s into the Method, which is something I’d love to do, even though it’s so hard, an incredible commitment. I’ve never had any professional training, so I might try it one day – but not with the character I’m playing at the moment [in the forthcoming BBC drama The Syndicate] because he’s such an idiot.

[In] the Potter films, my character took a sort of journey, too. I was lucky because I had 10 years to do it, every year developing the character of Neville a bit more, changing him slightly while keeping the essential character. Which is the hard bit, not losing sight of who he is. Pacino had a helluva shorter time as Michael Corleone. But, looking back on it, you can’t imagine anyone else doing it.

Also, Matthew will be on Soccer AM tomorrow morning [I believe at 10AM] discussing HP and his new project, The Syndicate.

‘The Syndicate’ to Air in March

Just a quick piece of news today thanks to the Yorkshire Evening Post.  The show is set to air in March of 2012 so you folks in the UK only have a short while to wait before seeing Matt on TV.  We also have a little more information on the show itself:

The five workers now face the daunting task of how to spend their millions after wining the jackpot on the mythical Mercury Millions lottery in Leeds scriptwriter Kay Mellor’s latest TV hit.

A suburban supermarket in the city and the iconic Bramham Park are among some of the recognisable city backdrops to feature in Kay’s newest prime-time drama The Syndicate.

New Details on The Syndicate

Today we have some new details on The Syndicate which Matthew will begin filming this weekend.  Matthew plays Jamie, who works at a supermarket managed by Timothy Spall (Peter Pettigrew) who plays Bob. According to the BBC website:

The Syndicate follows five workers at a cut-price supermarket in Leeds whose lives are turned upside down after they jointly win the lottery, going from facing redundancy and battling the present economic downturn to having more money than they ever dreamt of.

Timothy Spall plays supermarket manager Bob, whose newfound wealth cannot mask his persistent health problems. Joanna Page plays single mother Leanne, who although welcomes her financial freedom, is worried about the consequences that the win will bring.

They are joined by their supermarket colleagues – dog-loving Denise, played by Lorraine Bruce (Daziel And Pascoe, Benidorm), and brothers Stuart, played by Matthew McNulty (Five Days, Lark Rise To Candleford, Single Handed), and Jamie played by Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter).

[…]

Speaking about The Syndicate Kay says: “I was inspired to write it after a friend of mine was told she was losing her job. With a mortgage to pay and outstanding debts her only hope was to win the lottery. It made me think how many people were thinking the same. As cuts hit hard we’re left with only a dream of six numbered balls deciding our fate – what strange times we are living in! Its both funny and tragic; a perfect recipe for great drama.”
