Previously we shared Matthew’s involvement in the remake of All Creatures Great and Small. In that post we said the show would be airing on PBS (US) and Channel 5 (UK) some time in September 2020. It has now been updated to January 2021, no exact date revealed as of yet.
A new teaser has been posted on Channel 5’s Twitter account, no scenes with Matthew as it focuses on the lead of the show.
It has also been revealed that a second series is in the works. However, since we don’t know much about Matthew’s role in the show we aren’t sure if he would be involved in the second series.
“We are in discussions with Channel 5 in England and Masterpiece,” said Callender. “We are developing season two right now. So there’s every intention and hope that this will be a returning series and hopefully everyone will fall in love with the characters and want to run and run. Certainly that was our ambition from the outset.”

Sunday, April 5, 2020 at 4:34 pm | Comments Off on Matthew Lewis is Returning to US & UK TV Screens in ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ this September |
Somehow we missed this bit of news in November of last year, but thanks to a new chat Matthew did with Leeds United player Adam Cuthbertson for their show, The Lockdown, we know that Matthew filmed a new TV show at the end of last year and beginning of this year.
PBS Masterpiece and Channel 5 in the UK are co-producing All Creatures Great and Small, a seven episode re-make of an old show based on a book series, which will be airing in September 2020. No official date yet that we can find, but stay tuned!
The original show aired from 1978 to 1990. This new series will comprise of six episodes and a Christmas special. A brief description of the books/show is as follows:
Chronicling the heartwarming and humorous adventures of a young country vet, the books introduced readers to his unconventional mentor and the cast of farmers and townsfolk who lived and worked in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s.
It is still unknown what role Matthew will be playing in the series. Maybe he’ll share that information soon. You can catch a glimpse of him at 38 seconds into this video:

From the press release:
All Creatures Great and Small will shoot on location in Yorkshire, England, as 2020 sees the 50th anniversary of the original publication of the much-loved books.
Since their first publication in 1970, the beloved books of James Alfred Wight, published under the pen name James Herriot, have held a special place in people’s hearts throughout the world. Chronicling the heartwarming and humorous adventures of a young country vet, the books introduced readers to his unconventional mentor and the cast of farmers and townsfolk who lived and worked in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s. This new adaptation will preserve the rich spirit, tone and values of Herriot’s iconic characters and stories and will bring to life his sharply observed, entertaining and incredibly funny tales of country life in the North of England for a modern audience, introducing a new generation to his life-affirming stories.
“When it originally aired on public broadcasting, All Creatures Great and Small captured the hearts of millions of television viewers,” says Rebecca Eaton, Executive Producer of MASTERPIECE. “We promise that the new series will have all the wit, warmth, and quirky charm of the original – and of course, lots of irresistible animals.”
Sebastian Cardwell, Channel 5 commented: “James Herriot has a special place in the heart of the public and the commission of this iconic drama series, against the stunning backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales, is set to bring joy to a new army of TV viewers. The original books affectionately captured a unique slice of British life; in challenging times, we hope the charming and heart-warming stories of community and compassion will resonate with new audiences.”

Of his role in the film, Matthew says: “I fell in love with the script immediately and the team of creatives behind it. I’m also a big fan of Rose and her work and so to be opposite her shooting in beautiful New Zealand is a privilege and I’m looking forward to bringing this story to life.”
