Hero Complex Interviews Matthew Lewis

Hero Complex has posted a new interview with Matthew Lewis where he discusses the Potter series and Neville Longbottom. You can read the full interview at the previous link or in the press archive.

NC: What’s next for you? Well, TV or film. I’ll just do whatever I fancy. If someone wants to employ me, whoever wants to employ me, I’ll go and do that. I just want to work. I’m looking forward to doing different stuff and keeping my fingers crossed.

NC: I understand that you were a big fan of the books long before you were cast in the movies. I read all the books, and I said to my mom, when I was about 10 years old, I said, “If they make a film, will you take me to go see it?” But little did I know that I’d be in it. It’s pretty strange. I hope they enjoy it. I hope we got it right. The pressure’s on. We’ll see. … This film has just been so crucial for me, Neville being so integral in the story, and I just hope that everyone enjoys it. We’ve all been building up to this moment for 10 years, and being a fan of the books myself, I know I’m a part of that “everyone.”

Matthew Talks Harry Potter Uncertainty with Digital Spy

Matthew Lewis recently spoke to Digital Spy about the Harry Potter films and how he was never sure he’d be back for the next film.

“I originally signed on for one film, with an option on the second,” Lewis recalled. “We didn’t know where it was going to go. After the first two were made, I signed the same deal for number three with an option to do number four. Then nothing came through after number four. We didn’t sign up for five and six – we just didn’t hear anything for a while. There was a bit of speculation on whether they were going to do a fifth one or not.”

Lewis, who celebrates his 22nd birthday today, confessed that he worried that his changing appearance would ensure that he was replaced as the Gryffindor student. “I’d changed quite dramatically in myself – I was wearing a fat suit by this time, I was slimmer and taller than Dan [Radcliffe] and Rupert [Grint],” he said. “So I thought if they were going to recast, they might recast me, because I don’t look like Neville anymore.  But they didn’t, thank God, and went ahead with film five and asked us all back. They made the fat suit bigger and found other ways of making me look a bit more Neville-ish. I guess I owe them for sticking with me!”

Parade.com Interviews Matt Lewis

In a new interview with Parade.com Matthew Lewis talks about Harry Potter and saying goodbye to Neville. You can read the full interview at the previous link or in the press archive.

From zero to hero.
“The great thing about Neville is that even though he was scared and terrified, he always wanted to do the right thing. He always had a good heart, loyalty, and courage. In this last film, we see him take on the role of leader in Harry’s absence. He’s reluctant because he doesn’t want to be this leader, but he knows it’s the right thing to do, and if he doesn’t do it, no one else will. So he steps into the role and takes over.”

Would he come back if there was another film?
“I’d definitely be excited about new books and I’d read them. As for the film, I’ve been doing this for 10, 11 years now. I’m ready to go and do something different. I’m ready to say goodbye to Neville and see what else I can do. But if it was a genuinely good story, which if J.K. Rowling wrote anything, it would be brilliant, and they asked me, then, yeah, I would be quite excited. But I think our story is finished. I was very happy with the way it ended.”

Matthew Lewis Talks to Empire about Deathly Hallows Part II

Empire magazine have released a new video and text interview with Matthew Lewis where he discusses Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.  You can read the text interview at the previous link or in the press archive. Some snippets as well as the video are below.

You’ve said before in interviews that Neville’s seen carrying a dead body.
Yeah, that’s right. I mean, because Neville is the leader he’s determined to act like one so he’s always on the frontlines. I think he feels responsible for every student that dies because he knows that he’s the one putting them out there. But it was a challenge. I really hope they keep it in because it really shows Neville at his best. There’s all this fun stuff where Neville’s very adrenalised and on autopilot. But that bit brings him back down to Earth for a minute. And I really hope they keep it in.

We didn’t really see Neville much in Part 1. But Part 2 is, judging by the books, his finest hour.
I felt quite lucky to have been in Part One, to be honest, because the character’s not actually in the book until the end. But, you know, David said he wanted to stick him in just to remind people what was going on back at school. And it was just nice to have been in, because it means I was in all eight films even if it was only for one line!
