Short Interview with Matt

As part of his entry for the 2010 World Traveller Internship with STA Chris Cousins, a friend of Matt, has made a video about what to do while visiting his hometown Leeds.  In the video he has a small video with Matt that you can watch below, Matt is at 3:35 but I strongly suggest watching the whole video, it’s awesome.  If you like the video, or just want to help out, go to this page and vote for Chris!

I may have another fun surprise coming soon, but I can’t promise anything.

Also, don’t forget, filming for The Sweet Shop starts tomorrow so keep your eyes on the site for news and photos from filming!

MWS Media Wins Award at LIFF for “Nuryan”

MWS Media, the makers of Matthew’s new film The Sweet Shop, have won an award for Best Sci-fi/Horror Feature Film at the London Independent Film Festival for “Nuryan”, their first feature length film. The Sweet Shop will be their second film, so we are all expecting the same great results 😉 According to the press release:

MWS Media, a film and video production company based in Newbury, Berkshire, premiered the film in September of 2009 receiving praise for its adventurous approach to filmmaking. Bertie Stephens, the Producer of “Nuryan” and a Director of MWS Media said “Not only was the film made on an extremely low budget, we also decided to push ourselves creatively by making an entire film in split screen.”

The film was competing against entries from all around the world, including films with budgets of more than £1 million, a hundred times the budget of Nuryan.

Ben Myers, the Writer and Director of the film added “With practically no time or money to play with, this was always a daunting challenge, and although it was an enjoyable experience it was also one of the hardest things any of us have ever done in our careers. Therefore winning this award makes it all the more worthwhile.”

MWS Media’s Phil White, who came up with the split-screen concept for the film, was quick to praise the local community.  “We received a lot of support locally in using some fantastic locations, and this award was only made possible through the co-operation of a lot of people. From cast and crew down right through to all those who helped us, this was a real team effort.”
MWS Media are currently gearing up to shoot their next film, “The Sweet Shop”. With a slightly larger budget and a cast including Gemma Atkinson well known to British audiences from her time on “Hollyoaks”, Vanessa Haywood from recently Oscar nominated “District 9”, and Matthew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom in the “Harry Potter” films, “The Sweet Shop” is a romantic comedy/drama about a famous musician and a girl who runs a sweet shop.

Tom Furr, the company’s marketing manager said; “This award is a great achievement that puts us all in a great frame of mind for shooting “The Sweet Shop”, which begins in May. We’re using many of the same crew members that worked on “Nuryan” with us so that will really help the atmosphere on set.”

Congratulations!

Interview with Composer of ‘The Sweet Shop’

Since Matt news is still pretty slow I decided we should post news related to The Sweet Shop even if it isn’t specifically about Matt.  So, The Official Sweet Shop website has been updated with an interview with composer Phil White.  Here are a few exerpts from the interview:

What can we expect from the songs in ‘The Sweet Shop’?
They’re mostly acoustic tracks where the only parts are a vocal and an acoustic guitar. I’m hoping they will be representative of how the characters are feeling at the various points in their lives within during this film. Obviously I hope people like them, they’re all based on strong melodies so even if people don’t like them they’ll probably remember them! We wanted to avoid having to dub music on in this film in as many places as possible, we wanted the music to essentially be recorded live on set and then left untouched so you’re left with the performance we captured there and then, rather than something done later in the studio.

How much did the script influence your song writing?
Rather than let the script influence me when writing the songs for the film, I worked in the same way I have done previously with Ben Myers the Director, where he and I sit down and discuss the characters and what’s happening to them at the point in the film where the music is being used. I find it so much easier to then go away knowing the feel of the scene in terms of emotions on display from characters which obviously you can’t necessarily get from simply reading a script. Ben gives me mini breakdowns of the kind of thing he’d like the music to get across, sometimes its just a few words and others can be full paragraphs describing how he see’s, or hears the music for a certain film and I like the challenge of trying to come up with something that fits the film in his mind before we have even started filming, because if the director can visualise the scene with the music I’ve demo’ed up for him then that’s got to be a good sign I guess.

On a side note, here is my entry for the Facebook contest, please like it so I can get 100 likes 😉 If you have an entry you can post it in the comments and people can vote for it for you!
