Matt Lewis Talks Neville, Leeds, Star Wars & More In New Interviews

A couple more new interviews with Matthew this morning. First up is an interview with Die FILM Seite where Matt talks about what it was like playing Neville and also shows he’s not as clumsy as his character.

Gazette du Sorcier also posted their transcript of a round table interview they participated in with other websites. A rough translation of some of the questions may be read below:

Is there any news on the Bronte project you are scheduled to appear in?

He still hopes to be part of the project, but unfortunately doesn’t have any news. What makes him say we do well to remember him, he thought to ask for. However, there is no shortage of projects; he is about to depart for South Africa after visiting Cologne to start new episodes of Bluestone 42. He also returned from a shoot in the Caribbean but the project is top secret; we just know he sported a goatee and shaved it as soon as possible before going to Germany.

If you could choose any movie ever released and star in the remake, what would you want?

Almost without hesitation, Matthew begins to talk about Star Wars. He says he watched the movies when he was young and at that time he dreamed of being part of the universe. He used to put the tapes on “Auto Rewind” and fall asleep in front; sometimes waking up in the middle of the night to discover Leia strangling Jabba the Hutt, launch a “yeah, go ahead!” and go back to sleep immediately.

I then raise on the fact that a new trilogy is currently running; it is then that he says Domhnall Gleeson. Matthew said he had not auditioned for a role, but if the opportunity presents itself for one of the following two parts he will take it. After coming back down to earth, however, he said that there is an incredible number of other films that make hims ay “if only I had been there / I was the right age when they were made.”

In the past, Matthew has been a great ambassador for his native region, Yorkshire: what does he thing are must-see locations for people visiting the area?

The actor cites Leeds first, his hometown, but he then suggests York, pictured against the medieval enclosure which still stands (and publicly available). He also talked about the rise of Ilkley for “Cow and Calf Rocks”; the beautiful Yorkshire coast where Scarborough, known for its market and song, but also Whitby where would the best fish and chips in the country and who appears in the novel Dracula; and ended by talking about the Yorkshire Dales National Park. He recalled that the phrase “Godzone” is applied to the Yorkshire and it is not without reason.

Also, thanks to Sandra we have a translation of another interview Matt did.

How do you like Cologne?

It’s great. Although I am only here a day, but I ate pizza last night, had too much “Kölsch” (Cologne beer) , which is really great, but not this morning, but last night it was really tasty. The city is very beautiful and I hope I can further explore the city. Today I am still very busy, but tomorrow and the rest of the week I will try to see the City.

How do you like the exhibition? Is it like coming home or back to the set?

Yes, the last film ended four years ago. The things after Harry Potter was something completely different.

In the exhibition, which I have already seen years ago, you feel transported back directly. You go through the wall to  the Hogwards Express, come into the common room, you see the clothes you were wearing and the props that you used, and you’re back in this world.

Video: Cologne, Germany Press Roundup #2

Rather than adding to our already long first press roundup post for Matthew’s Germany trip, here’s a second roundup. SnitchSeeker have posted their roundtable interview with Matthew and that can be watched below, as well as a transcript of their questions. We have also added some new photos to the gallery. Once again, if you have any photos feel free to send them in! (webmiss[at]magical-menagerie.com)

SnitchSeeker: Can you tell us something about the [Goblet of Fire] dancing shoes?
Matthew Lewis:
Yeah, I’m crap at dancing. They bring back some memories these shoes. I wore them on a couple of times for the Yule Ball. I’ve just seen them in there actually. It’s a bit of a blast from the past. We had to have some full dancing lessons. People came in and taught us how to dance. Classical dance. I can’t dance. I’m terrible, I didn’t wanna dance. I was 15: “I don’t wanna dance.” But we did it and we learned it for months and months. And actually, Bonnie [Wright] and I learned a tango. In the movie we all did the waltz, but we did the tango. We spend two months learning the tango and we never shot it. Never did it. Can’t remember any of it now.

SnitchSeeker: Are there any of the props on display that you would personally like to have?
Matt:
Yes! A lot actually. The main one is the sword of Gryffindor. I would have loved to have kept that. I got Neville’s outfit from the final movie. Cardigan and trousers covered in blood. Haven’t put it on since I finished. I’ve got a wand, but I don’t think it’s the wand.

SnitchSeeker: Would you have liked Neville to be the Chosen One instead of Harry?
Matt:
Too much work. I was asleep in there. I’m too lazy. I thought the character of Neville…. What Jo Rowling did with Neville was incredible. She knew from day one the importance of his character. I didn’t know it until I read the books. The idea of taking someone who is shy, a little chubby, bullied, wasn’t good at using magic, terrified, that turned him of being into the hero of the piece. That’s just incredible. He could’ve been the Chosen One but he was Neville… He couldn’t even amount to a prophecy. He couldn’t even get that right. But then in the end he becomes more than that. He becomes so important. I thought that was incredible. The message is incredible. I said this earlier but everyone is the world is capable of brilliance. Everyone. What Neville did was that little boy in the class… he can amount to something. He can be the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or whatever.

I still get fan mail from people saying they had a crappy childhood or were being bullied at school. And seeing how Neville, despite all of that, became a hero inspires them. As an actor to have a piece of your work inspire someone is just unbelievable. So humbling. I love Neville as he is.

SnitchSeeker: Do you think Neville affected your personal life? Your personal growth?
Matt:
Yeah, when I first started I was Neville. I was shy, chubby, I didn’t really talk very much. I had a few friends at school, but I wasn’t so popular. And then as Neville grew, so did I really. We took that journey together. That journey of maturity. We really came a long way. So definitely parts of Neville that I still keep. Yeah, he’s a good guy.

SnitchSeeker: Are you currently working on a project?
Matt:
Well, I just finished one which I can’t really talk about. How rubbish is that! I’ve just been shooting in the Caribbean. I had this horrible goatee. It was awful. My last day was Saturday and I shaved it off like straight away. I thought “I’m not going to Germany with this, man!” And I had these big old sideburns. And in two weeks I go back out to South Africa to do another series of ‘Bluestone 42’. I don’t think it’s been on in Germany. I don’t know if it plans to be, I hope so! I should talk to the producers about it. We did a series about that last year.

Video: Matthew Lewis Interview at HP Exhibition

Thanks to our lovely friends at FeltBeats, who were able to attend the press event in Germany yesterday, we got a few questions to Matt who answered them for us. So thank you to Sandra for sending over the videos you see below [they are both the same, just different angles] and for asking our questions. She asked Matt the following (my questions are bolded)

  1. What do you think keeps bringing fans back to Potter and these experiences after all this time? What is your favorite part about attending events?
  2. Do you have plans to crack the US market like some of your Potter costars? Or are there upcoming projects you can tell us about?
  3. You’ve been traveling a lot for work lately, where is one place you really want to visit on your time off?
  4. Who would you have wanted to play Neville’s Grandmother in the series?
  5. Having been in a band, would you ever like to play a guitarist in a film? Perhaps a biopic? Or maybe record a song with the other Potter actors who are musically inclined?
  6. What one current actor would you love to work with?
  7. Have you heard of the verb “longbottomed” which refers to kids who start out awkward-looking and then get hot when they are older?

He mentions he might try staying with Tom Felton and find some jobs in LA. And teases what he was just filming for BBC in Guadalupe and will be returning to South Africa for Bluestone 42. When asked about his travel destination of choice he says New York and New England because of all the seasons. As for playing a guitarist in a film, he says he would love to play John Lennon since he is a huge fan of the Beatles.

We have also added over 100 pictures of Matthew from Sandra to the gallery! If you have any you wish to share please send them to webmiss[at]magical-menagerie.com and we will post them with a credit to you in the gallery!

Even the cloak of sombre Professor Snape is. “When Alan Rickman was the wearing and through the scenes, he was terrifying,” is Matthew Lewis aka Neville Longbottom recalls. “But when you talked to him, he was the kindest in the world.

For Matthew Lewis, the Gryffindor sword is the most amazing exhibit. “I’ve got it here for the first time in years seen. This brings me lots of memories instantly awake as I had in the final scene in the last film, as I have since with Lord Voldemort, with Ralph Fiennes filmed. Neville was a fantastic role!”

Harry Potter exhibition wowing European fans by Zoomin_UK

“I have taken Neville’s costume of the final Battle. This blue cardigan with all the blood on it. And also the fake teeth I had to wear.” He wanted to take something from the exhibit: the sword of Gryffindor. “I wanted to take it, but I couldn’t. But now I have seen again it here in the exhibition for the first time since filming.” Though he remembers with pleasure the time as Neville, however, to watch the movies is a torture: “I hate it. I have seen every film once, at the premiere.”

Besides, it has been the role of underestimated, slightly overweight Neville Longbottom not at all – for which Matthew Lewis had to wear a fatsuit, by the way, as he got older – which is a little unpleasant for him now. “I do not like to see myself as a child. It is embarrassing for me. But there will always be a part of Neville in me. I have grown with him and was very similar to him as a child: clumsy, plump and shy. I have become adult like the character. We have gone on this trip practically together.”

“As a child I always wanted to play a soldier. I have made this in the BBC series ‘Bluestone 42’ now. Now, therefore, I would love to play James Bond. It will never happen, but it would be cool.”
