Matt Talks Harry Potter: The Exhibition and More in New Interview

In another interview from Matthew’s time in Germany, he talks about the Harry Potter films and his other roles.

Ragna: “What is your opinion about the props going on big tour so that everybody can see them? It’s like a little look behind the scenes and a look behind a big part of your life. What’s your opinion about that?”
Matthew Lewis: “Well, I think it’s brilliant. You know, we finished filming four years ago. To come here today and going to the Exhibition… it just takes me back to that time. Melting to that world, that’s so wonderful. It’s weird and so incredible to have so many fans around the world. Having Fans in England, that’s crazy, but having fans in Germany it is like: WOW! I think it is great that we can take the things out to the fans and show them the props in this Exhibition.”

Ragna: “What do you think is the coolest and most awesome prop here?”
Matthew Lewis: “In my opinion, all Neville-Stuff is pretty cool. To see my costume and the probs it reminds me of the great time. I love the Quidditch Stuff – to play the quaffel is very cool. I love sport, I’m a big sport fan. Quidditch is a whole concept. I love it.”

Ragna: “How does it feel that people on the street only connect you with Neville Longbottom rather than with Matthew Lewis?”
Matthew Lewis: “Well, I’m quite fortunate actually that since Harry Potter finished I’ve been doing a lot of different stuff and a lot of this has been in British Television. Not really in other countries. So in England I come away from Neville and do other stuff, different from Neville. The roles I’ve been getting are far away from Neville. When you make a program or a film for ten years you always gonna be associated with. It could be worse. The character of Neville is a fantastic character. I wouldn’t be able to do the shows at the West end in London when I wouldn’t have acted as Neville before.”

Ragna: “Are you in contact to the main cast from Harry Potter?”
Matthew Lewis: “Yes, I spoke to Emma (Watson) last week. I was talking to her about her UN – “HeForShe” – campaign, which is wonderful. I think it’s brilliant, you know it’s incredible. Her speech was mind blowing and she texted me and asked me if I could send her a picture for her campaign. So I did that for her and I spoke to Dan last month. Well, it’s difficult to see each other, because we are all around the world doing different stuff, but we are still in contact with each other and I might even go play football with Oliver Phelps at some point when I am back next month.”

Ragna: “If you could be a wizard yourself: what would be the one thing you would desire the most to conjure?”

Matthew Lewis: “Ibuprofen! I drank too much last night. Too much Kölsch. There are simple pleasures, like Pizza and Ibuprofen.”

Ragna: “How was it to play sort of a loser (Neville Longbottom)?”
Matthew Lewis: “I think everybody on the planet is capable of incredible things and people get put down by all other people and society and that’s getting in the way, but everybody is capable of incredible things. Everybody has that inside of them, and so to be able to play that. This journey that someone who wasn’t a complete loser, but bullied and shy and you know that other stuff, to be able to take him on that journey and to show everybody what’s in Neville. I was so privileged and I still get fan-mails from people, who say that Neville helped them through tough times, crises in life or bulling at school. To read that a job that you have done, as an actor, has inspired people, is just great.”

Matt Lewis Guest Starring on ‘Death in Paradise’

Fans will recall that Matthew was in Guadalupe last month filming a secret project. We can now finally confirm that Matt will be guest starring in the BBC1’s Death in Paradise! For those of you unfamiliar with the show, it is a drama series about a detective inspector who is assigned to investigate a murder on the paradise island of Saint-Marie in the Caribbean. A description of the upcoming series (season for those of you in the US) is as follows:

As the series returns, the endearingly clumsy but brilliant DI Humphrey Goodman (Marshall) is struggling to contain his feelings for DS Camille Bordey (Sara Martins), who in turn finds herself battling the dating scene – all thanks to her well meaning mother. Officer Dwayne Myers (Danny John-Jules) attempts to hold the fort following the departure of Sergeant Fidel Best (Gary Carr), who has left Saint Marie for a new job on a neighbouring island.

But Comm. Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) is keen to step up and exercise his investigative muscles once again, much to Dwayne’s frustration. The police department also welcomes new recruit, Sergeant Florence Cassell, played by popular French actress Josephine Jobert (Sous Le Soleil De Saint-Tropez).

The fourth series will begin airing sometime in 2015, we do not know when Matt’s episode(s) will air.

Listen: Matthew Lewis on 1LIVE; More Video Interviews

Matthew Lewis was a guest on 1LIVE and the interview is now online.  Unfortunately Matthew’s answer are overlaid by a translation so it’s hard to make out for those of us who don’t speak German. Thanks to Sandra, we have summary of the interview:

If he took something from the set?
He took the Neville’s costume from the final battle – this cardigan with all the blood on it and the false teeth

What do you like most about the exhibition? What is your highlight?
the dark department, there are things of the Death Eaters and Voldemort, the giant spider – all in a dark room, it is a crass atmosphere, cool feeling to go through this room.

How did it start with you and Harry Potter? Was there an audition?
Yes, but it already started earlier, before the casting. He was 8 years old and started to reading the books. He loved the books and then it was said that they make a movie about it.

Would you have preferred to play Harry?
When I read the books, I never wanted to be Harry. I wanted to be at this school and be his friend, but as Matthew Lewis.
With the role as Neville I had the best of both worlds.

What was the funniest on set what you still remember in 1000 years?
There is a story from the time of “Harry Potter ad the Prisoner of Azkaban” , Alfonso Cuarón, our director, he had a fart machine there, and he has hidden it on set and as Alan and Michael shooting a serious scene and then – Matt makes a farting Sound – it was very loud in the great hall and all had to laugh. We could not film a long time because we started again and again to laugh.

Do you still have contact with the other HP actors? Do you have a WhatsApp group?
No, no we don’t. We make a few things together every year. For example – we had a stuntman David Holmes, he has been injured badly during the shooting and every year we play a charity cricket to raise money and there we see us

What would Neville do when he meets Saruman?
Neville would run away.

… Gargamel?
Neville likes the Smurfs. Neville would try to beat him. He likes to fight for the people who can not fight for themselves.

…evil fairy from Maleficent?
she is a combination of beautiful women and really evil. She is nothing for Neville, he would cry and curl up on the floor
